Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is becoming more and
more important to homeowners and businesses. The
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that
indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted
than outside air. Due to improved building
techniques and concern for energy efficiency,
homes built in the past 20-30 years are essentially
airtight. These homes retain and re-circulate
indoor air along with any contaminates via the
central heating and air system—this can increase
the severity and frequency of respiratory conditions. Children
are most vulnerable because they breath more rapidly
and inhale more pollutants per pound of body weight
than adults. If you’re concerned about your
indoor air quality, consider the some of the following
options:
Duct Cleaning
Duct Cleaning removes years of dust accumulation
in your heating and cooling duct work. If
you notice an excessive amount of dust on the return
registers or notice that you need to dust the furniture
more often than you previously did, you may need
to have your duct work inspected and cleaned.
Air Filters
All heating and cooling systems must have a filter.
It is a good idea to use a pleated media filter
and change it every 3 months. If you’re extremely
sensitive to dust and pollen you may want to consider
an Electronic Air Cleaner that attaches to the furnace.
These Air Cleaners are much more efficient and cost
effective than the stand-alone air cleaners you
may see on television.
Humidifiers/De-humidifiers
Most homes need humidity added to the air in the
winter and humidity removed from the air in the
summer. Having too much or too little humidity
can lead to coughing, sneezing, sore throat and
skin irritations. Controlling the humidity
will also help prevent bacterial growth in the home
and damage to wood furniture.
Germicidal UV Light
UV lighting is being used in hospitals, laboratories,
nursing homes and schools to reduce conditions favorable
to mold, bacterial and viral growth. This
technology is now affordable for use in residential
applications.
Digital Programmable Thermostats
Programmable thermostats prevent wide swings in
indoor air conditions. They also allow you to individualize
your heating and cooling system— permitting more
or less air filtration, humidification, dehumidification
and circulation.
Heating and Cooling System Maintenance
The heating and cooling system in your home should
be inspected annually by a trained service technician
that is NATE certified. An annual inspection
will inform you of potential air quality problems
like excessive dust, humidity and Carbon Monoxide. It
will also keep your system running safely and efficiently |
