Service of
Bloomington, Inc. was started by Joe Hamros in 1946 as a small 2 man service company. Through the 1950’s and 60’s the company continued as a small service company gaining a solid reputation for great service, excellent craftsmanship and innovative solutions. Commercial Service actually installed some of the first air conditioning systems in Bloomington in the late 1950s.
In the very early 1970’s Commercial Service was purchased by Jules Sonneborn, a seasoned manufacturing plant manager from New Bedford, MA. Jules & his wife June were looking to move back to her home town (Unionville, IN). Jules immediately made some big changes and began aggressively recruiting new customers and increasing the company’s client base. Within a couple years the business’s growth and success grabbed the attention of Jules and June’s son, Mike Sonneborn.
Mike Sonneborn, a graduate of the University of Pittsburg with a degree in Economics, moved to Bloomington with his wife Sherry in 1975. Mike, like his father, seized the opportunity to expand the organizations size and reputation. Mike developed relationships with organizations like General Electric, Cook Inc., Monroe County YMCA & the City of Bloomington. These relationships developed through the 1980’s and 1990’s and were the driving force for the company’s growth. By the late 1990’s Commercial Service had grown from a 2 man service company to an organization that employed over 30 full time employees and had major mechanical projects all over the state.
By the early part of the new millennium, two key people joined the organization. Greg Humphrey, a CPA, took over as treasurer and Scott Rink joined as Vice President of Operations. With their help over the next 10 years the organization expanded to over 50 full time employees.
In 2006 Commercial Service developed a highly specialized Residential Division dubbed The Residential Green Team. This team, mirroring the history of Commercial Service, is quickly developing into a regional leader in residential heating and cooling. They have been named the regional leader in high efficiency heating and cooling by Trane Manufacturing Company for 3 years in a row and recently won the coveted “Pace Setter Award” for having installed more high efficiency system than anyone in the state.
The Commercial Service of today is one of the largest and most respected mechanical contracting organizations in south-central Indiana. The organizations reputation is well known and widespread – great service, un-paralleled craftsmanship and highly efficient HVAC solutions for both Commercial and Residential clients.
